Hey All!  With the release of Babe and my newest film, “The Crown Jewel,” I would like to make a post to share some of the process along our hectic 2 week journey though the making of. I’m sure Babe has some awesome process stuff to share from his shots as well, and ill be sure to link them up when he gets around to posting them. For now, have a look at some of these shots.  Fro those of you not familiar with Challenge Your World 20/20, learn more here. Hope you Enjoy!  Also Justin was nice enough to post it up on Motionographer.  Have a look at the post here.

Lets start with the Final Piece and work backward:

This film represents some ideas Babe and I feel very strongly about. Food is key to our survival and good or healthy food is essential for our well being. Not only does our machine help the environment, but helps everyone grow their own nutritionally rich foods. Becoming less dependent on what the government decides to feed us, becoming more self sufficient and supportive of our independent growers and local farms. To promote our solution, we felt a broken retro style commercial aesthetic was appropriate as advertising is still part of the problem. The Crown Jewel is solar powered, featuring a detector for separating Heirlooms from Genetically Modified seeds, with preset ultimate growing conditions for your fruits and veggies, and built-in compost bin. We hope you enjoy the film.

Here is some of the development work we created along the way:
machine_web
This was the final design I created for the machine.
It is interesting to compare this to the original sketch i created for the machine:
gh_conceptsketch_machine
Very early Concept sketch  of the machine.
Below is a detail animation of one of the features in the commercial section of the film, that shows off the “Season Selector™”
It was a lot of creating snow particles and sun for the respective seasons to add to the control panels. This feature is to ensure that your garden has optimal growing conditions no matter what the season your currently in. This was so you don’t need to have your veggies trucked in from California if you live in NYC. Save on those Fossil Fuels!

Here is one of the incarnations of the Crown, this version, this is the one we ended up using, It was designed by our talented friend Lauren Indovina.
Here is another version, the original that she had created:
This was the original Crown that had roughed out as a guide for Lauren to really dial it in. Man we had a lot to design and not a lot of time! When I think back on how much we got done in such a short time, I cant really figure out how we did it?!

The Crown being basically the god figure for the piece was also the logo for the machine as well. This is also where the machine gets its name from.
Seen as we named the machine the Crown Jewel, we needed to come up with a logo for the machine itself. Here are a variety of incarnations that we went though before realizing the final design.

This is one of the earlier scene mattes for the initial pull out and final shot.  trying to figure out the lanscaping, lighting and grading. This is not exacly the same lighting and grading that was used in the final but is somewhat similar.  Below is a shot sequence to try and understand the camera flow.

This was just a rough layout from the one of the matters to try and feel out the camera move.

Below is a gallery of production screen grabs from some of the parallaxes in After Effects from my shots.

This film was made entirely in 2d and we tried to achieve more depth by paralaxing the still designs in After Effects. Above are a few examples of technique.

And Finally to finish off the process work, We wanted to show a poster series that we used in the film during the acid trip out moment. I created these as a kinda of Jab scientists who are making GMO veggies. Like mutant fruitand veggies that are all combined togther to make some kind of wierd messed up gene pool of a fossil filled, negative nutreint, fake ass, plastic, wanna be veggie.  FYI, these types of things exist, and there not healthy;)

gmoposter1

An Apple with Kale growing out of the top! And the Crowd goes wild!!  Its a joke, some of the crowd may actually go wild, thats the fun were having here a weee bit as our tongues are planted firmly in cheek ;) We are definitely exercising our sarcasm with these posters.

gmoposter2

Blueberries that grow Broccoli! Yuk! Part of the aesthetic that we were going for with the commercial part of this was a very retro, old school 60’s and 70’s look. These posters were suppose to feel very weathered as if main stream grocery store chains were rockin them for quite some time.

gmoposter3

The final poster was red peppers with carrot stems. We have these posters if anyone is interesting in actually having one. Drop either Babe or myself and email and well send you a high res version to print out.

Ok! That concludes the process work on my end for the Challenge Your World piece: “The Crown Jewel”.. Ill be sure to update this post when Babe posts his process and Link em up! Hope you liked it.
